Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (released in the U.S. as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”), the 2001 Chris Columbus English/U.S. family witchcraft sorcerer magic adventure fantasy thriller (“Let the magic begin”; “Journey into your imagination”; “Journey beyond your imagination.”; “Need a break from your family? Spend Christmas with Harry.”; “It’s everything you wished for this Christmas.”; “Not the only one with a homemade sweater for Christmas?”; “It’s everything you wished for… and more.”; “Based on the novel by
J.K. Rowling“) starring Daniel Radcliffe (in the title role as Harry Potter), Rupert Grint (as Ron Weasley), Emma Watson (as Hermione Granger),
Richard Harris (as Professor Dumbledore),
Maggie Smith (as Professor McGonagall),
Robbie Coltrane (as Hagrid), Ian Hart (as Professor Quirrell), Richard Brenner (as He Who Must Not Be Named),
Alan Rickman (as Professor Snape), and
John Cleese (as Nearly Headless Nick). Note that this film was known as “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” everywhere except the U.S., where it was known as “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”. This was to keep the film consistent with the book series because the U.S. publisher, Scholastic, had changed the title of the book to “Sorcerer’s”. The change was likely due in part to American children not being familiar with the mythical alchemist substance. An uncited source states the publisher also thought that an American child would not want to read a book with the word ‘philosopher’ in the title!
