Curse of the Crimson Altar (1968) Poster, British

Unframed: 30 x 40 in. (76 x 102 cm)

Boris Karloff remains one of the most collected and renowned stars of horror films. He was famous for his Universal horror films in the 1930s. Christopher Lee is equally famous for his horror films of the 1950s and 60s, and the work that he did for Hammer Film Productions. This piece features both these classic horror stars.

This British horror film was directed by Vernon Sewell. The cast includes Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff (in one of his last films), Barbara Steele and Mark Eden. When antiques dealer Robert Manning’s (Mark Eden) brother disappears, Manning visits the isolated country house where his brother was last seen. When he arrives in the evening there is a party taking place, and he’s invited to stay. His sleep is interrupted by unusual dreams of ritual sacrifice. When he asks about his brother he is assured that he is not there. However, he’s told about a witchcraft cult, who are still active. The legend of the Black Witch of Greymarsh hangs over everything.
